The base weighs 5 lbs and is substantial. The owners family uses that combo. The owner observed 2 things. Sometimes family members alter the center of gravity (CG) backwards with the base of the arm vs the top of the arm. The setup then leans out and back, so the CG is no longer over the base and most stable. The owner corrects it as he's a super conservative engineer. His family members are not. The net-net of the answer is that while it has never fallen over, the fact is unless the user is always paying attention to CG then yes, at some point the CG will be out of whack and it will fall. It's just good ol' fun math and physics. If it does fall over then it will be loud, likely damage a table, a foot and maybe the iPad. So it really comes down to the user and user error. One other observation is if you have kids or hapless room mates, if anyone pulls, snags or otherwise connects with a cable going to the iPad then CG and everything will be out the window and all bets are off. Hope that helps. If in doubt about your setup and need to pay attention to CG, then don't do it. This is a heft and well made product family. Hope that super transparent based on user observation answer helps you.
